Did You Know:
• In 1926 the old Lake County Jail on Main Street housed 150 inmates
• In 1975 the Lake County Jail housed 480 inmates
• In 2000 the new jail addition, with the old jail, houses 1,040 inmates
• There are 70 trusty inmates that clean, cook, and maintain the work in the jail
• Due to the trusty workers, the Lake County taxpayers save over 2 million dollars a year for work done in the jail
• There are approximately 400 jail incident reports written each month
• A jail triples in age compared to other commercial buildings because it is being used 24 hours per day. The jail doesn't shut down at 4:00 pm
• The new jail addition that opened in 2000 is now six (6) years old
• The old jail built in 1975 is now 81 years old
• Of the approximately 1050 inmates at the Lake County Jail and Work Release, 83% are adult males, 12% adult females, and 5% juveniles
• Approximately 15,000 people will be booked into the Lake County Jail this year

Mail Distribution
2000 pieces of inter-office and inmate mail is processed weekly. All inmate mail will be searched for contraband such as drugs, pornography, and weapons.

Money orders received in the mail must be receipted with a copy going to the inmate, and a copy to commissary.

Commissary
Inmates with enough money in their account can purchase items. No credit is given. Over 200 inmates order commissary by inmate phone service daily. The commissary items must be bagged and deducted from their accounts.

In 1989, inmates purchased $2,000 of commissary items per week. In 2002, inmates purchased $10,000 of commissary items per week.

Medical
Medical care is supervised by a medical staff fully accredited through the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. They provide dental services as well as medication for existing medical problems.

Most pregnant female inmates are high risk pregnancies due to drug use and no prenatal care. A high risk pregnancy can cost approximately $7,000.

Religious Services
There are 33 religious services provided by the Jail Chaplain Ministry Fridays through Sundays. Chaplains provide bibles as well as counseling upon request. Inmates worship in the service of their choice.

Over 50 community volunteers provide religious services at the Lake County Jail.

Laundry
Inmate laundry services insure that inmates have clean laundry on a weekly basis. Laundry is done in the jail laundry facilities and returned to the inmate on the same day.

Over 1,000 inmate uniforms are washed per week. Over 1,000 laundry bags with t-shirts and underwear are washed weekly.

Food Service
The food service staff prepares over 3,000 inmates meals per day. Dietary foods for medical and religious reasons are prepared daily. The kitchen staff supervises approximately 20 trusty inmates to help prepare the meals.

Breakfast is prepared at 2:30 am. Breafast is served at 5:00 am. Lunch is served at 11:00 am. Dinner is served at 4:00 pm.

Housekeeping
36 gallons of bleach are used weekly to clean the jail, along with 1,500 bars of soap, and 8 gallons of glass cleaner. 9,600 garbage bags are also used monthly.

4,800 razor blades used monthly. Each razor must be checked to be sure that the blade is intact. Razor blades are used to make deadly weapons.

140 mop heads are used monthly. Inmates must shower and clean their cell houses between 6:00 am and 8:30 am. Each cell house is given a shakedown at least once per month.

1,500 rolls of toilet paper and 750 sanitary pads are used weekly. Female inmates have tripled in population in the jail. There are 125 female inmates at LCJ.

The Courts
Approximately 45 inmates are escorted to the criminal courts daily. Approximately 20 inmates are escorted to the Magistrate Court daily.

Inmates are pulled for the Gary City Court at 5:30 am. All inmates must be searched when leaving and returning to their cell houses.

Visitors
Visitors to the jail enter the facility through the front lobby and take elevators to the floor on which they will visit with an inmate. Inmates assigned to the medical floor see visitors via video visitation.

Inmate visits are conducted six (6) days per week. Over 400 visitors come through the LCJ per day to visit.
