The Lake County Sheriffs Department Gang Crimes Unit is
comprised of seven investigators, a narcotics detection trained
canine and a full time Indiana National Guard Intelligence analyst.
The Gang Crimes Unit primary responsibility is focusing on criminal
gang activity, identifying gang members and their territories, investigating
drive-by shootings, deterring drug usage and sales by identifying
and targeting known drug houses through interdiction.
The Gang Crimes Unit works co-operatively with the Lake County
Drug Task Force, the Lake County Tactical Team and several Federal
Agencies in its on-going gang related investigations.
In the last three years the Gang Crimes Unit has generated over 1400
arrests which resulted in the confiscation of approximately 200 weapons,
large quantities of Marijuana, Powder Cocaine, Crack Cocaine and Heroin,
the recovery of over 50 stolen vehicles and the seizure of thousands
of dollars in drug money.
The Gang Crimes Unit has also identified over four thousand
gang members, which make up 250 gangs in Lake County, Indiana.
In addition to its other duties the Gang Crimes Unit conducts
numerous seminars to other law enforcement agencies as well as informational
classes to crime watch groups, schools, churches and civic groups. |
