Willie Stewart Jr. was raised in Gary, Indiana and graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in 1968. He is presently a member and Deacon of Gary 20th Century Baptist Church. Willie currently resides in Gary, Indiana and is married and the father of one step daughter and a proud grandfather of one granddaughter.
In December of 1972 he was hired and sworn in as a Lake County Police Officer and graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana in May of 1973.
During Willie’s thirty three years of service with the Sheriff Department he worked in every division within the department, receiving several certificates of awards, training and commendations. He rose through the ranks and attained the permanent Merit rank of Lieutenant.
In 1996 he was promoted to Sergeant over the Felony Warrants Division, 1997 promoted to Deputy Commander in the Civil Division and 1998 Commander over the Civil Division by Sheriff John Buncich.
Willie has been a member of various organizations such as F.O.P. Chris Anton Lodge #125, Indiana Sheriff’s Association, NAACP, FEMA, NOBLE, and Gary City Precinct Organization 4th. District Captain and precinct committeemen.
After thirty three years of service, Willie retired from the Sheriff’s Department in February of 2004 and began his second career with the Gary Community School Corporation Security Services Department where he was appointed to the position of Director of Security.
Willie has been a facilitator in the Gary Public Schools and Churches informing parents and students of the negative aspects resulting with using and involvement with drugs and gangs.
On January 1, 2011, Willie was given the opportunity to continue his law enforcement career and serve the citizens of Lake County by being appointed Deputy Chief of Police for the Lake County Police Department by Sheriff John Buncich.
Willie was appointed as the Lake County Jail Administrator on April 16, 2012 by Sheriff John Buncich.
