Oscar Sanchez

Oscar joined the Lake County Sheriff's Department in January 2007 and serves as Chief of Staff Administration to the Lake County Sheriff, Roy Dominguez. As a senior staff member he supervises the Sheriff’s office support staff, manages and coordinates the Sheriff’s schedule, accepts resumes and interviews potential employees.   Oscar works in conjunction with other senior staff members to coordinate interdepartmental operations and is the community relations liaison who develops and publishes ads and other publications as needed. Oscar oversees and directs other projects as may be necessary.

Oscar Sanchez is a graduate of the Harvard Trade Union Program, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. The Harvard Trade Union Program is one of the most prestigious educational programs for trade unionists worldwide.

Oscar is a retired member of the United Steelworkers of America (USW) Local Union 1011. He served with the USW International Union as a staff representative, international representative and assistant to the international president during his long career with the union. As a union representative he helped negotiate labor agreements with a special focus on problem solving. He coordinated a national and international campaign against an unfair multi-national corporation. In that capacity he served as USW District 7 coordinator for Indiana and Illinois, and as the US/Japan coordinator.

Assigned by the USW to the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) as Executive Director in Washington, DC, Oscar was responsible for the day-to-day administration of LCLAA including fund raising and management, marketing, training and coordinating annual conventions as acting editor of the Councils’ newsletter.

Through resourceful fund raising and marketing of the organization, Oscar successfully increased annual revenues for the non-profit organization from $350,000 in 1997 to over $940,000 in 2002 which enabled the organization to increase its capacity for additional projects and training programs. LCLAA consisted of 74 chapters in 24 states and Puerto Rico.

Oscar volunteers at Ivy Tech College helping teach a U. S. Citizenship class to permanent legal immigrant residents. Oscar has extensive foreign travel to Israel, Europe, Japan, Mexico and South and Central America.

I am a retired police officer with the Lake County Sheriff's Department. I retired in 2001 as a Lieutenant with 21 years of service, having served in many divisions with a concentration in Family Services. I worked for the Prosecutor's office for two years and then returned to the Sheriff's Department in a civilian position. I work closely with the community on a variety of projects including Domestic Violence, Child Abuse Prevention, Red Cross Blood Drive and Emergency Assistance, Internship Program issues. I am married with one son living in Highland, Indiana.
