George Zorodney 3-14-1930
Deputy Zorodney
was killed in a motorcycle accident while testing one for the newly
formed motor squad. He was riding the motorcycle between Crown Point
and Cedar Lake when he crossed the centerline and was struck by
an
on-coming vehicle.
Deputy Zorodney
had also served as a Minneapolis, Minnesota, police officer.
Sheriff
Roy Holley 1-16-1933
Sheriff Holley
was killed in a shoot-out that resulted from an argument between
neighbors over the cutting a tree for firewood. When Sheriff Holley
arrived at the scene Michael Lantare (67) shot the neighbor, ran
into his farmhouse in Ross Township and barricaded himself upstairs.
Holley entered the home in an attempt to arrest Lantare and was
fatally shot as he climbed the stairs.
Before the gun
battle ended Gary, Hammond and other cities, as well as more deputies
arrived to assist. Lantare was shot several times by Hammond Officer
Adam Funk but it is believed the suspect was dead prior to Funk's
shots.

William Patterson 1-25-94
Sergeant
William Patterson, 44, was killed when his police car was
struck broadside by a vehicle stolen by juveniles who had
escaped from a detention facility in Indiana.

Paul Mitchell 6-12-99
Officer
Mitchell, 25, was killed when his police vehicle struck wet
pavement and hit a guardrail as he was responding to a call.
