The aviation
unit began with the acquisition of two military surplus helicopters
in 1977. The TH 55's, a two-seater, were brought back from Arizona
on a trailer with the intent of using one for parts and making one
serviceable helicopter. Those officers stripped, painted and restored
one helicopter.
Since the inception
of the unit a new Schweizer 3-seat helicopter was purchased. Through
the government surplus program two OH-58s and one OH-1 Huey were
acquired.
There are three
pilots assigned to the unit and provide service on 2 shifts. They
are available for call-out when needed.
Some of the
invaluable services they provide are:
Pursuit assist:
They can follow vehicles and inform ground units direction of travel.
This alleviates the dangers involved in pursuit driving.
Patrol:
They can cover greater area in the location of stolen vehicles and
assist boaters in distress.
K-9, Aquatics,
Marine and Tactical Units: They provide support to these units
with the availability of rapid deployment.
