The
Lake County Sheriff has jurisdictional authority over approximately
22 miles of lakefront along Lake Michigan. This limit extends ten
(10) miles out.
Through a cooperative effort between the cities of Hammond, East Chicago
and Gary, there are twelve (12) officers assigned to the Marine Unit
during the summer months. Each of those cities has assigned police
or fire personnel to the boat.
There are seven (7) vessels available to the Marine Unit for patrol
activities. They range in size from a 36 patrol boat to three
(3) jet skis.
Their calls for service vary from endangerment of lives to people
out of fuel. They also work in conjunction with divers from the Aquatics
in rescue and recovery. |
